2012 - 40 : Non-smokers Dilemma

A friend of mine posted a question "How to tell a guest to not smoking inside my house without hurting their feeling?"....*mode : wondering*
Most of the adult men in my family are smokers. (except for my uncle and my first brother who just quit a few years ago). I was raised with the idea that it's normal for people to smoke and i still think nothing wrong with it except that it smells really annoying/disturbing and it's bad for health (for both first-hand smokers and second hand smokers - me and other non-smokers).
As much as it annoys me. I also personally feel a little bit awkward to tell the smokers to not smoking when i'm around. They are family, friends and relatives. I'm not that uptight so i just suck it up. I believe that i'm not the only one having this dilemma.
I wont discriminate people just because they are smokers but there should be unspoken rules that all smokers need to follow to lessen the non-smoker's awkwardness...even without that NO SMOKING sign;

  1. If there's kids around, dont smoke. Find kid-free area to smoke. Most of the time, you have to decide what is the best for kids. Yaeh..being an adult is suck but still you have no right to expose them to the danger.
  2. If there's pregnant lady around, dont smoke. Yeah..even she said she doesnt mind, it's not about her but it's about the kid that she carries in her tummy.
  3. If you are with a group of adult and you want to smoke, at least ask for permission. They are adult, they should be able to make a good decision for themselves ( but if they are pregnant, rule no 2 still apply)
  4. Do not smoke in the closed area ( in the house, toilet, any room). The smell always stay even after you leave.
  5. Do not smoke in the car even with the open window (unless it yours ). Rule no 1, 2 and 3 still apply.Like i said in no 4 the smell always stay even after you leave.
  6. Disposed the cigarette butt properly. If you are the only one smoking, dont make it other non-smokers responsibility to clean-up after you.
  7. Get some mint or gums after smoking because your breath stink.
I got nothing personal against smokers. Please help yourself, smoke as much as you want.  it's your money, it's your health, it's your risk but it's our environment. Just a little favor to make our coexistence easier.
