2013 - 05 : Slumdog Millionaire a.k.a Q & A

The original title of this book is Q&A. There's a movie adaptation from this book called Slumdog Millionaire.   I bought the book during BBW book sales. At first i thought that the story line is same as the movie but i was totally wrong. It is better!

Slumdog Millionaire

This is a story about Ram Mohammad Thomas who participate in a game show, Who Will Win A Billion and manage to answer all 12 questions correctly in that games show. However he  has been arrested because he has been accused of cheating. A lawyer, Smita aka Gudiya comes to his rescue and he tells her the story how he knows all the answers.
Unlike the movie, the timeline story does not really follow the chronology. As he tells how he knew the answer, we learn this life story pieces by pieces but at the end, we get the whole picture. Just like jigsaw puzzle.
When Ram Mohammad Thomas was a baby, he was left at the church which later has been raised by a priest. When he was 8 years, the priest died and he was sent to juvenile home where he met his best friend Salim who loved Hindi movie very much. A rich man, Maman adopted Salim and Ram and brought them to Mumbai . It turned out that Maman was a bad man who crippled kids to beg. Salim and Ram run away and went to work with Neelima Kumari, an aging Bollywood actress. Neelima was a very nice but unhappy woman with abusive boyfriend. Later, she committed suicide as she didnt want to die old.
Ram and Salim rented a room in a chawl where they had a neighbor Mr&Mrs Shantaram and their daughter, Gudiya. Mr Shantaram always get drunk and abused his family and almost raped Gudiya. One day Ram pushed Mr Shantaram of the stair to protect Gudiya from becoming his father's victim. Ram thought that he killed him and he ran away to Delhi leaving Salim behind. Salim then worked as a servant to a professional assassin where he savde his victim, a movie producer. In returned, the movie producer sent him to learn acting.
In Delhi, Ram worked with an Australian diplomat, Mr Taylor who turned out to be in spy ring. Mr Taylor has been caught and send home. Ram decided to go back to  Mumbai to see Salim. However, on his way, he accidentally kill a robber who rob him. Afraid to be caught by police, he run away and stopped at Agra where he worked as a tourist guide at Taj Mahal. Then he fall in love with a prostitute, Nita. One day, Nita was badly beaten by a "customer". Ram found out that the "customer" was Prem Kumar, the same guy who abused Neelima and he went back to Mumbai to seek revenge. 
He participated in the game show Who Will Win A Billion to get close to Prem Kumar who was the host of the show and to kill him but later he changed his mind as Prem Kumar traded the answer of the last question to spare his life.
